Tunis, 14 April 2017:
The Presidency Council’s Haj committee say that 565,569 people registered online for the 2017 Haj during the two weeks application were being received. Registrations ended at midday yesterday.
It is a record number, the Committee for the Care of the 2017 Haj Season says.
Of those who registered, 294,426 applied as potential pilgrims, and 271,143 as escorts.
The committee will choose by lottery on 30 April the 7,000 people who will be allowed to go on Haj this year.
The 7,000-figure is set by the Saudi Arabian Haj authorities. It is based roughly on one person per thousand of the population from individual Muslim countries.
