The Presidency Council’s foreign minister, Taher Siala, has been taking part in the conference in Washington on cracking down on the so-called Islamic State (IS). Some 68 states and organisations have joined what is the first major international conference organised by the Trump administration.
In his inaugural presentation the new US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, spoke of the fighters from Misrata aligned to the Presidency Council’s government of national accord having “routed” IS in Sirte, and depriving it of its only territory outside of Iraq and Syria.
Noting that the new administration was pleased to have representatives of the Libyan government in attendance, Tillerson added that together the various countries present were determined to administer a lasting defeat to IS.
According to the Libyan news agency LANA, Siala had planned to also discuss the Libyan crisis with a number of US and international officials while in the US capital.
