Benghazi, 19 February 2017:
The Libyan navy has arrested a South Korean car carrier heading to Misrata, claiming it ignored a warning not to enter part of Libya’s coastal waters designated as a restricted military zone.
According to Captain Mohamed Al-Majdoub, the ship was boarded and taken with its crew of 12 Filipinos to Ras Hilal port, 50 kilometres west of Derna, after it entered the zone.
The carrier, Morning Compass, Bahamian-flagged but belonging to South Korean company EUKOR, is reported to be carrying 5,107 vehicles. It left Incheon in South Korea on 27 January and arrived at Port Said on Thursday.
The offshore military zone was created to prevent supplies reaching Derna, controlled by the pro-Islamist militants.
