The diplomatic drive to find a way out of the Libyan crisis is not letting up despite the failed Cairo meeting between Presidency Council leader Faiez Serraj and Khalifa Hafter.
Egyptian, Algerian and Tunisian foreign ministers are to gather in Tunis in a fortnight, it was announced today. The 1 March talks are designed to pave the way for a presidential summit with Egypt’s Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, Algeria’s Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Tunisia’s Beji Caid Essebsi. The three leaders last discussed Libya in December in Algiers
Meanwhile Algeria is continuing to pursue its own soundings of Libyan political players. Today a delegation from the Misrata-led Bunyan Marsous operation which drove IS terrorists out of Sirte flew into Algiers.
Abdelkader Messahel , Algerian minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League repeated afterwards that Libya needed strong and legitimate institutions, in particular a unified army.
Algerian media reported that the large BM delegation was led by major-general Salem Mhamed Djega. A statement issued after the talks emphasised the need to “accelerate the political resolution of the crisis, with the preservation of the unity and the territorial integrity of Libya and the cohesion of its people, while favouring national reconciliation.”
