Benghazi, 7 January 2017:
The Beida-based interim government’s education ministry has ordered that schools be closed tomorrow and Monday, because of the cold weather, particularly in the east of the country.
The temperature in Benghazi saw a high of 11º centigrade and a low of 8º today, but with the wind and the rain felt much colder. In the Jebel Akhdar, however, temperatures have been lower and there has been some snow.
The forecast for Sunday and Monday is much the same . Winds of up to 60 kilometres an hour are expected, with rain and possibly hailstones.
The problem is that many schools have no heating. Some in Benghazi are completely open to the elements with broken windows and leaking roofs, having been damaged in the fighting.
For the same reason, universities and colleges are also being closed, at least for Sunday. The Omar Mukhtar University in Beida has told students to stay away. Interns at some hospitals too have been told not to come in.
