Cairo, 10 December 2016:
Sharif Al-Wafi, a member of the UN-mentored Libya Dialogue team has lashed out at UNSMIL’s decision to cancel its next meeting, planned to take place in Tunis this week. The new session was agreed when Dialogue members met at their inconclusive meeting in Malta last month.
Wafi claimed that neither he nor two of his other colleagues, Tawfiq Shuhaibi and Ahmed Al-Abbar, had been consulted about the change nor informed about it.
He said that they were being ignored by UNSMIL. It was cooperating with some of the members only. This, he told the Libya Herald, was doing nothing to help rebuild stability and security in Libya.
The Presidency Council, he said, was a complete failure and it had to be removed, especially following what he called “the scandalous attack” on the oil crescent by militias based in Tripoli. It was operating hand in hand with these militias in Tripoli, and this was not acceptable.
Moreover, he added, it did not have the backing of the House of Representatives (HoR) and was not going to obtain it. It was an illegal institution because the constitution had not been amended by the HoR to incorporate the Libyan Political Agreement. That would not happen, he believed.
