Benghazi, 14 October 2016:
In a move aimed at reorganising military structures in the east of the country, the head of Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Hafter has appointed a new military operations chief for the area.
Brigadier-General Ramadan Buzeid has been put in charge all military operations in Eastern Military Region, a massive zone stretching from Taknis 125 kilometres east of Benghazi to Jaghbub near the Egyptian border, and from the coast to 200 kilometres south of Jaghboub. He will have responsibility for the airbases at Labraq and Tobruk, the Omar Mukhtar Operations Room, itself tasked with taking Derna from the mujahideen and securing the border with Egypt.
Buzeid was quoted today by the Beida offices of the Libyan news agency LANA saying that plans had already been formed to reorganise the army in the area with the creation of more than seven battalions. These would integrate the various military forces there. New headquarters for the battalions were also being prepared.
The LNA has managed to impose its control over almost all the area with the prominent exception of Derna.
Although Major-General Abdul Razzaq Al-Nazhuri is the military governor of all the east, from Tobruk to Ben Jawad, his is seen as a more political command and it is thought that Buzeid will report directly to Hafter.
