Tripoli, 30 September 2016:
The Presidential Council has announced that this Sunday, 2 October, will be a public holiday, as it is also 1 Muharram, the first day of the year 1438 in the Hijri calendar.
Government offices, banks and state organisations will be closed for the day, although with the current extensive power cuts and banks out of cash, it is not clear that the holiday will make a significant change for ordinary people at least in the west of the country. Although eastern Libya consistently ignores the PC, it is thought that the holiday will be observed there too.
