The university, which is being hived off from the Beida-based Omar Mukhtar University with campuses in a number of other eastern towns, will have 18 faculties.

The Tobruk campus will cover an area of 182 hectares and will include administrative buildings, a main library, some 288 accommodation units for staff and students, sports fields and gymnasia, a mosque, cafeterias, medical facilities, commercial premises and other facilities.

The campus design is by Fadlallah Abdulhamid Abd-Rabbuh.

Abdulaziz Buhulaiga was appointed dean of the new university last November.
