Tripoli, 28 July 2016:
Efforts by Egypt to mediate a settlement between the Presidency Council, the House of Representatives (HoR) and Khalifa Hafter have failed to achieve a breakthrough.
The Presidency Council leader Faiez Serraj, HoR president Ageela Saleh were all reported to be in Cairo at the same time at the invitation of the Egyptian government.
Putting a brave face on the failure, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry today said that it had organised meetings involving Salah and Serraj and other members of the Presidency Council over a two-day period. It added, however, that this was the beginning of a series of planned contacts.
Details of the Serraj-Saleh meeting have been noticeable by their absence, other than reports that it was informal.
Meanwhile Hafter reportedly refused to meet Serraj at all.
In his meeting with new Arab League chairman Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Saleh was told that the League was determined to continue taking an active role in finding a solution to Libya’s crisis, although it would still support UN efforts.
