Tunis, 13 June 2016:
UN Special Envoy Martin Kobler has called for international involvement into last week’s murders of 12 former Qaddafi-era soldiers who had just been released from prison in Tripoli after a judge ruled there was insufficient evidence to prosecute them.
“This crime should be thoroughly and independently investigated and perpetrators must face justice,” he said, condemning “in the strongest terms” the killings. “I am utterly shocked and saddened by this heinous and vile crime, and particularly outraged by family accounts indicating that the victims were savagely beaten and shot in the head and chest several times,” Kobler said.
He added that he would personally follow developments in the case very closely. The rule of law had to be followed, he also said, it was the foundation of democratic institutions. The current system of impunity had to end.
The 12 murdered soldiers had been accused of taking part in the killing of Libyans fleeing Tripoli along the Airport Road during the revolution. The whereabouts of another seven also reportedly released with them are unknown.
