Tripoli, 5 May 2016:
Reports that thieves stole LD 8 million in cash in Tripoli’s Tajoura district yesterday have . . .[restrict]been denied by the Jumhouriya Bank. However, they have also confirmed by a local official. The money was supposedly being delivered to the local branch of the Jumhouriya Bank.
According to the official, the delivery vehicle was held up by two armed men who used their car to force it to stop. Those delivering the money did not make any effort to resist attackers, said the official who did not want to be named.
On its Facebook page, though, the bank has called the report “just a rumour”.
Initially, there was considerable scepticism over the reported heist, given the lack of cash in the banks. However, just over a week ago, a new delivery of banknotes arrived at the Central Bank of Libya for delivery to the banks. [/restrict]
