Tunis, 21 April 2016:
The Presidency Council last night announced that it would provide full support for Derna to . . .[restrict]rebuild itself following yesterday’s action when Islamic State (IS) fighters were forced to abandon their remaining bastions in the Fataieh area, south east of the town, and the area known as District 400, on its eastern edge.
Congratulating the people of Derna for their expulsion of IS and the town’s final liberation, the Council called on both the army and the town’s “honorable revolutionaries” to unite their efforts as part of the wider national objective of destroying IS.
In a parallel move, the National Forces Alliance has likewise congratulated the people of Derna for getting rid of IS. In a statement, it also praised the army for its victories in Benghazi and called for cooperation between the army nd the people of Sirte to liberate it.
The statement from the NFA, led by Mahmoud Jibril, spoke of “sacrifices” made by Derna against IS. Last night, it was reported that nine young people in the town had been killed as a result of exploding mines left by IS in Fataieh and District 400. It is believed they had gone to explore the areas following the IS departure. [/restrict]
