There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that the House of Representatives is central . . .[restrict]to the political process and the Libyan Political Agreement, UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler said today.
Kobler was welcoming yesterday’s Cairo meeting between HoR President Ageela Saleh and senior parliamentarians, including first deputy president Emhemed Shouaib and second deputy president Ahmaid Huma.
Kobler praised the HoR leaders for showing determination at what he described as a critical juncture in the political process.
Kobler did not however comment on Shouaib’s demand in Cairo that EU sanctions against Saleh must be lifted, nor his protest that the State Council should not have come into being before the LPA had been ratified by parliament.
Reflecting the general dismay of the international community at the HoR’s long-standing inability to gather in sufficient numbers for a vote on the LPA and the Government of National Accord, Kobler had actively encouraged the State Council to set itself up and elect its officers. These now include Misratan politician Abdulrahman Sewehli, chosen as its president. [/restrict]
