Tripoli, 27 March 2016:
The prominent Misratan politician Abdulrahman Sewehli has mounted a barely-concealed personal attack on Sheikh Sadeq . . .[restrict]Ghariani calling for imams throughout the country to ignore the Dar Al-Ifta that Ghariani heads.
Without actually naming the sheikh, who is now only recognised as Grand Mufti by the Ghwell administration in Tripoli, Sewehli yesterday called on Libyan clerics “to come out against the self-appointed guardians of religion, revolution and the nation and who are playing with the fate of Libya and are leading its to perish in a spiral of chaos and destruction”.
Sewehli has been at odds with Nuri Abu Sahmain, the leader of the rump of the General National Congress whom he has called a dictator.
A member of the GNC Dialogue team, Sewehli backed the Skirhat deal. He is also a member of the House of Representatives. Earlier this month his Tripoli home and the HQ of his Union for the Homeland party was attacked. He subsequently filed a complaint against Ghariani’s Tanasuh TV channel Al-Nabaa TV, thought to be owned by Abdulhakim Belhaj, accusing both of inciting violence.
His latest statement may well have been prompted by Ghariani’s extension to the young of his earlier call for jihad against government forces in the east led by Khalifa Hafter. This week the sheikh told the young to ignore their parents and head off to the fighting in Benghazi. [/restrict]
