Tunis, 25 February 2016:
Ambassadors and special envoys from the . . .[restrict]US and a number of European states have welcomed the unofficial statement signed by a hundred members of the House of Representatives yesterday endorsing the Government of National Accord (GNA) led by Faiez Serraj.
“This declaration is an important signal that the majority of the members of the HoR are ready to formally endorse the GNA as outlined in the Libya Political Agreement”, a joint statement from the ambassadors published today said, adding that “those blocking further progress in the political process and the endorsement of a GNA act against the explicit will of the majority”.
The ambassadors – from the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the US and the UK – called on HoR President Ageela Salah “to acknowledge the approval by a majority of MPs” of the GNA and its programme.
They added that they were “concerned by the fact that the MPs’ statement mentions threats of violence and intimidation against members of the Presidential Council and the HoR”.
Such threats, they said, had “no place” in any democratic process.
There was an urgent need to establish a unity government in Libya, they said, in order for there to be security and stability “that the Libyan people deserve”. Their government would, the repeated “respond positively” to any requests from the GNA for support and assistance to help restore security, the rule of law, and a functioning economy. [/restrict]
