Tunis, 29 January 2016:
Several members of of the nine-strong Presidency Council have returned to Tunis to work on its second . . .[restrict]government list to give to the House of Representatives by 4 February. That was the deadline set by the Tobruk parliament when, on Monday, it rejected the Council’s 32-ministry administration as too large.
Prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj, who returned to Tunis last night along with deputy PM Musa Koni, has already pledged that a new list will be ready in time for the deadline. A meeting of the Council is expected tomorrow, Saturday, by which time other members should have arrived.
There had been reports that the Tunisian authorities had asked the Council to leave Tunisia because it posed a security risk in the current political climate. This led to suggestions that it would either relocate back to Skhirat or go to Cairo. In the event, it has simply moved from one 5-star Tunis hotel to another.
Serraj and Koni returned to Tunis from Cairo where they had gone following their visit earlier this week to Algiers. In the Egyptian capital, Serraj had talks with the Egyptian government about the situation in Libya as well as his cabinet plans.
General Khalifa Hafter was also in the Egyptian capital for the past two days; he reportedly flew back to Libya today. He too briefed Egyptian officials on the situation in Libya.
There has been no announcement as to whether Serraj and Hafter met while in Cairo.
