Tunis, 24 December 2015:
MESSAGE . . .[restrict]FROM PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA TO THE LIBYAN PEOPLE, DECEMBER 24, 2015
To the Libyan People:
Please accept my best wishes as you celebrate Libya’s 64th year of independence on December 24.
Protecting the promise of the 2011 Libyan revolution and establishing inclusive institutions after 42 years of dictatorship are profound challenges, but the Libyan people have demonstrated the commitment to resolve them. Courageous Libyans have engaged in the UN dialogue for nearly a year to resolve the political crisis. We welcome the December 17 endorsement of the Libyan Political Agreement by political dialogue members from the House of Representatives and the General National Congress. Only with the establishment of a Government of National Accord that is inclusive, democratic, and responsive to the Libyan people can the work of engineering peace, prosperity, and security for all Libyans truly begin.
We have an opportunity for all Libyans to come together to resolve the many challenges you face, including insecurity and economic difficulties. Da’esh’s presence in Libya has caused incredible suffering and all Libyans must join together to remove this scourge from your country. The United States is fully committed to working with the new Government of National Accord to address the urgent economic and counterterrorism problems facing Libya today. We stand with the Libyan people and fully support your courageous efforts to build a stable, prosperous, and peaceful Libya.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama [/restrict]
