Benghazi and Tripoli,  23 October 2015:

Five people have been killed and at least thirty injured in mortar attacks . . .[restrict]on a demonstration in Benghazi’s Kish Square this evening.

Seven mortar shells were fired in two separate patterns. The first three rounds fell short and landed in a car park. A second salvo a few minutes later landed in the crowd to deadly effect.

The time between the two salvoes suggests that someone near Kish Square had been calling back a range correction to the firing position.

When the first rounds hit relatively harmlessly  in a parking area, it will have appeared to have been a repeat of last Friday’s ineffective attack .

Around a thousand people had gathered in the square for Friday prayers today after which they began to protest against the UNSMIL, its chef Bernadino Leon, the peace deal and the proposed Government of National Accord. [/restrict]
