Tripoli, 9 September 2015:
A car bomb exploded around midday today outside the maximum-security Hadba prison in south Tripoli . . .[restrict]where Saadi Qaddafi, Abdullah Senussi and some three dozen other members of the former regime are being held.
No one is reported to have been hurt although two other vehicles are said to have been destroyed in the blast.
Hadba prison also houses the court where Senoussi and eight key Qaddafi-era figures were sentenced to death in July. The prison, controlled by forces loyal to former Libyan Islamic Fighting Group commander and more recently deputy defence minster Khaled Sharif, has been at the centre of torture allegations against Saadi.
It is not known who was behind the attack.
There have been a number of car bombs in Tripoli lately, most recently ten days ago, when one exploded outside the Tripoli headquarters of the Mellitah Oil and Gas company. It was claimed by Islamic State forces. There were reports of another explosion in Tripoli yesterday but nothing was confirmed.
