Tunis, 15 August 2015:
An official Tunisian survey of Libyans living in Tunisia puts the number at between 200,000 . . .[restrict]and 250,000 persons according to the Tunisian news agency TAP.
This is considerably lower that figures announced by Tunisian politicians and Libyan officials alike.
Tunisian officials have regularly said that there are more than a million Libyans in the country at present. Some put the figure as high as a million and a half.
There aRE at least three different groups of Libyans staying in Tunisia: opponents of the Qaddafi regime who fled there in the years before the revolution, Qaddafi supporters who fled there after it, and opponents of the Libya Dawn regime in the west of the country who have fled in the past year. The latter group are put at over half a million.
Many Libyans head to Tunisia because it is next door and no visas are required.
It is thought that many Libyans in Tunisia have not registered their presence with any authorities, either Tunisian or Libyan. [/restrict]
