Tripoli, 7 August 2015:
Rioters have hoisted the hoisted the Qaddafi-era green flags over schools and government buildings in Sebha . . .[restrict]during clashes with members of the Awlad Sulaiman tribe.
The tribe was one of the major supporters in the town of the 2011 revolution. However, there was also strong support there for the former regime, notably from Qaddafi’s own tribe, the Qaddadfa, which is partly based in the area, and the Magarha, the tribe of Abdullah Senussi.
Continuing demonstrations have rocked the town since the death sentences passed last week by a court in Tripoli on Saif Al-Islam Qaddafi and Abdullah Senussi. Homes are now reported to have been evacuated as a result of the fighting in the town’s Sukara and Manshiya districts.
There are also reports – so far unconfirmed – that a helicopter belonging to Misrata’s Third Force which was deployed to keep the peace in Sebha and the south, has been shot down in the Brak Al-Shatti district north of Sebha. [/restrict]
