Tunis, 6 June 2015:
Spain’s defence minister, Pedro Morenes has said that if the international community is attacking IS in . . .[restrict]Iraq and Syria, it ought to be attacking it in Libya.
Morenes told the Spanish daily El Pais that there was an international coalition to fight IS and that should mean to fight it wherever it was. “If the caliphate extends to Libya, [then] the coalition will have to take action”.
The Spanish line echoes that being taken by Italy. Morenes also claimed in his interview that EU foreign policy supremo, Federica Mogerini has recently told him that she found it unbelievable that there were still countries opposed to attacks on IS.
However, the Spanish foreign minister ruled out attacking IS in Libya without the approval of the Libya government. “Libya is a sovereign state,” he said, “regardless of who is in charge there”.
