Tripoli/Benghazi, 14 June 2015:

Derna is now fully in the hands of the Shoura Council of Mujahideen (SCMD) and . . .[restrict]is said to be calm following yesterday’s collapse of Islamic State (IS) forces in the town. Dozens of IS members are reported to have headed west to the IS bases at Ras Hilal and Latroun or to a farm east of the town, also used as a base. Many others surrendered to the SCMD or, if from Derna itself, are, according to a source in the town, hiding in their homes or those of relatives.

There have been reports of  Libyan National Army airstrikes today on the farm, at Al-Fatayeh today. A number of car bombs left by IS in the town have also been diffused.

It is reported that in yesterday’s fighting the son of Ansar Al-Sharia leader Sufian Ben Qumu, Mohamed Ben Qumu, was killed. His body was among those taken by the Red Crescent to the local hospital.

Also reported killed was the son of Fikri Makras, the local man who allegedly beheaded postal worker Abdulnabi Al-Shargawi a fortnight ago. Makras himself was reported killed in this week’s fighting and his dead body then decapitated by angry locals.

Meanwhile, Libyan flags are again being seen in the town, replacing those of IS. Local residents have been out, waving flags in celebration of IS’ defeat. The independence flag has also again appeared on many buildings. [/restrict]
