Tripoli, 24 April 2015:
The 57-state Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned the “atrocious” massacre of thirty Ethiopian . . .[restrict]Christians by the Islamic State (IS) in Libya.
“I wish to express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims, the government and the people of Ethiopia over the tragedy. The OIC shares their grief,” OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani said in a statement on the group’s website.
Madani went on to warn that the incident had again highlighted the need to further step up international collaboration to combat and eradicate the “menace” and “terror” of the IS.
Furthermore, Medani called on world leaders to address the root causes and the environment that breeds extremism and gives space for divisive “foreign” influence.
The OIC is currently forming a group of wise men to visit Libya in order to help facilitate what it describes as a social and political equilibrium. It wants to move Libya from the institutional vacuum of the Qaddafi era and the violent aftermath of the despot’s fall to a state of “national identity, shared values and transitional institutions”, said Madani.
The OIC was founded in 1969 as a “collective voice of the Muslim world” and works to “safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony”. The organisation also has permanent delegations to the United Nations and the European Union.
