Beida, 13 April, 2015:
A cloud of polluted air rolled across Jalu yesterday, coming from a fire at the Nafoura . . .[restrict]oilfield northeast of the Jalu Oasis.
“We saw a giant shadow roll in over the oasis at 11 am. ” Jalu resident Aymen Al-Majebery told the Libya Herald. ” This came from the nearby oilfields, especially Nafoura”. It is not known what caused the oilfield fire.
The oilfield operations near the oasis, in the south-eastm are frequently blamed for air and land pollution.
“There have been calls to the National Oil Corporation to solve this problem” Majebery explained.
Activists from Jalu have already asked that the Constitutional Drafting Assembly includes provisions that oblige operating companies to protect the environment and agricultural land.
