The stated aims of the conference were to promote African-Asian economic and cultural cooperation and to oppose colonialism or neocolonialism. The Kingdom of Libya was represented at the first meeting in 1955.
Delegates from nearly 90 countries today commemorated the anniversary by marching together from the Hotel Savoy to the Gedung Merdeka, or Building of Independence, where the first conference was held in 1955. [/restrict]
