Beida, 7 March 2015:
Tensions rose in Kufra today following the murder of a young Zwai man at a . . .[restrict]petrol station, allegedly by a member of the Tebu community. According to reports, there was a fight between the victim, named as Fuad Ateg Haweel, and the Tebu man who had slept overnight in his car waiting for petrol. It is said that Haweel had tried to jump the queue.
The Zwai-Tebu crisis committee comprising elders from the two communities immediately convened to try and calm the situation.
Since early 2012 the south-eastern desert oasis town has been riven by at times murderous clashes between the majority Zwai and minority Tebu communities, resulting in the almost complete separation of the two into different zones. It was only in the middle of last year that a fragile peace was established with the setting up of the committee.
Today’s incident is the first in two months between the rival communities. In the last, a Tebu woman was killed allegedly by Zwai fighters who opened fire on the car she was travelling in. Her husband survived the incident and elders took action to prevent further clashes. [/restrict]
