Tunis, 9 March 2015:

The German embassy to Libya has denied a report carried by the Libya Herald on 6 March . . .[restrict]that Germany is offering humanitarian asylum to Libyan citizens.

“The German Embassy Tripoli wishes to clarify rumours and comment on false media reports regarding humanitarian asylum in Germany’’, the embassy said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

‘‘The article published by the Libya Herald on March 6 under the title ‘Germany adds Libyan citizens to list of countries able to receive humanitarian asylum’ is a false report.

“Only people persecuted for political reasons are afforded asylum in Germany in accordance with Article 16a of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany. Requests for political asylum can only be made in Germany or at the German border,” the German Embassy in Tripoli, now based in Tunis, said in a statement.

The report by this newspaper was quoting the official Arabic–language pro-House of Representatives state news agency, LANA. This report it now transpires was false.

The Libya Herald would like to apologise to all concerned for any inconvenience caused by this report.

Currently, there are no countries offering asylum on humanitarian grounds to Libyan refugees. [/restrict]
