Tripoli, 26 February 2015:
Six Libyans are being held unjustly in the UAE and denied their rights, claimed the . . .[restrict]General National Congress (GNC).
Some 30 Libyan nationals were taken into custody in the Emirates last August in what was allegedly a series of politically-motivated arrests. It was thought that the arrests came as a result of the detainees’ association with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Human Rights Watch expressed concern about some of the detentions, saying that a lack of information about who was being held and where they were imprisoned increased the chances that the detainees could be tortured.
The Legislative and Constitutional Committee of the GNC yesterday condemned the continued holding of six detainees and demanded their immediate release. Some of the original 30 were released in December. It is uncertain if the others have been freed.
According to the GNC, the six still being held have been exposed to “torture and physical and psychological abuses”. The GNC called on human rights organizations to intervene. [/restrict]
