Benghazi, 31 January 2015:
Despite continued military action in some parts of the city and the cold weather, the first . . .[restrict]gathering of protesters in Benghazi since the current fighting started some three months took place yesterday outside the old Qaddafi katiba headquarters in the Birka area.
Expressing support for the army and police, the demonstrators’ anger at the killings, kidnappings, violence and destruction which they have had to endure was turned against Turkey, the US, the UK and Qatar. The small group – around 50 – accused them of culpability in the destruction of the city.
The demonstrators also demanded that all the city’s members of the House of Representatives join in its sessions in Tobruk. Two members, Ali Abuzakuk and Saad Al-Jazwi, both allegedly members of the Muslim Brotherhood, have been boycotting it.
Elsewhere in the city, LNA aircraft continued to strike Ansar Al-Sharia targets in Leithi district during the day. Explosion could also be heard in Garyounis district and the downtown. Random shells are also said to have landed in Hay Dollar district near Leithi.
