Tripoli, 22 January 2015:
US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that the United States and the European . . .[restrict]Union must “get behind” UN Special Envoy to Libya Bernadino Leon’s initiatives to facilitate dialogue between warring factions in Libya.
Speaking to the press after a meeting in Washington on Wednesday with EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, both Kerry and Mogherini agreed that stabilising Libya was a high priority for the Western allies.
Kerry noted that the next day, Thursday, he would be in London for an international meeting on countering Daesh and violent extremism. He stressed that in order to curb terrorism, the international community had to move ahead on “every single front” — militarily, through intelligence sharing and by “attacking” the root issues that motivate the radicalisation of new recruits.
Nonetheless, Kerry insisted that terrorists’ efforts to drive the international community apart were not only failing, but having the opposite effect.
“They’re bringing us together with greater determination, with greater resolve to be able to get the job done,” he said.
Daesh’s activities in Libya were highlighted at the London meeting by UNSMIL head Bernardino Leon.
