Tripoli, 13 January 2015:
The Souk Al-Talaat branch of the Gumhouria Bank was robbed yesterday by armed gunmen in broad . . .[restrict]daylight in front of numerous witnesses.
With their faces hidden gunmen stormed the bank at midday, grabbing all the cash in the bank – LD 420,000.
None of the gunmen could be identified. “They rushed into the bank very fast and ordered all of us to lie on the ground. I couldn’t work out how many of them there were,” a bank clerk said. “They just used one of our colleagues to collect the available cash for them and then quickly left.”
Recently, thieves similarly with their faces covered, wearing militia uniforms and in militia cars, have carried out a number of other bank raids in the capital. They have also been involved in car-jacking.
The last major bank heist occurred in December at the Saraya Bank. That particular bank was robbed three times in 2014. [/restrict]
