Tripoli, 17 December 2014:

Major-General Abdulsalam Obeidi, who was sacked by the House of Representatives this summer as Chief . . .[restrict]of Staff but is still recognised by the rump Congress in Tripoli, had announced the formation of a joint operations room to control all military operations in Libya.

Obeidi has appointed Mohamed Al-Ashtur to lead it. The joint operations room will consist of the heads of all the military forces and militia leaders that are part of Libya Dawn and support the Hassi administration.

Obeidi, in a press conference yesterday, claimed that the joint operations room would be politically neutral and would exist solely to protect the residents of Libya and secure the borders, ports and airports.

Although Obeidi claimed the joint operations room was neutral and free from political pressures, he ended his speech by stating that the General National Congress and Hassi’s “National Salvation Government” had to be part of the dialogue process. [/restrict]
