Benghazi, 1 December 2014:
An explosives expert, Fathi Al-Obeidi, was shot dead at his home yesterday in Benghazi’s Hawari district . . .[restrict]yesterday.
According to a family member, he and the rest of the family had already left the city for safety elsewhere further east (the family member would not say where). However, he was telephoned two days by “a neighbour” who told him that the home had been hit by a rocket and had been burgled.
He returned to Hawari where in fact nothing had happened to the home. However, in the early hours of yesterday morning, gunmen knocked on the door and, when he answered, shot him dead.
The family member did not know who had phoned Obeidi but added that after the shooting the gunmen had stole money and jewelry.
Obeidi was not a member of any military group, the member claimed, saying that he had trained with the military before the revolution but had then left to study English. He had joined the revolution, however, during which he had worked with a brigade defusing bombs in Ajdabiya. Since then, he had been used as a bomb expert by Operation Dignity. [/restrict]
