21 December 2014:
Islamic militants in Derna have forbidden the sale of tobacco products. They claim it is haram. . . .[restrict]They attacked a number of outlets selling cigarettes, seizing them and publicly burning them.
The militants, members of the Shoura Council of Islamic Youth which effectively controls the town and has pledge allegiance to Daesh, said that they would publish anyone who sold cigarettes or tobacco.
There have been a series of attacks in Derna for over a year on kiosks and other places selling cigarettes. Earlier this year there were also a number of similar attacks in Benghazi, again believed to be the work of militant Islamists.
