Tripoli, 20 November 2014:
Tunisia has closed both the Ras Jadir and Debiha border crossings for four days beginning yesterday . . .[restrict]as it holds the presidential elections on Sunday.
The border will be closed to all traffic moving from Libya into Tunisia. However, those wishing to cross from Tunisia into Libya will be allowed to do so.
The Tunisian authorities have regularly expressed deep concern about the chaotic situation in Libya which has enabled weapons to be easily smuggled into Tunisia for use by terrorists. They have heightened security across the nation ahead of Sunday’s election.
Tunisia also shut its border last month during parliamentary elections. Riots or small clashes frequently occur at the border crossing, requiring extra guards. By closing the border the government is able to re-direct security personnel to other areas of the country to help maintain calm during the election. [/restrict]
