Tobruk, 25 November 2014:
The Chief of Staff, Major General Abdul Razzaq Al-Nazhuri, has called for an increase in military . . .[restrict]salaries. He made his appeal at a meeting in Tobruk today of the House of Representatives Defence Committee.
Salaries of members of the Libyan armed forces are among the lowest in the world. They have improved slightly since a couple of years ago when, famously, a senior Qatari officer, comparing his salary to that of a Libyan counterpart, said that he spent more on perfume than the Libyan was paid.
The fact that ordinary members of irregular Libyan militias are paid more than twice the salary of a senior officer is also said to be a major factor in Libya’s current security problems.
In his report to the committee, Nazhuri also said that there had been significant challenges rebuilding the armed forces’ capacity. In particular, more equipment was needed, he said.
He also explained in detail what is happening in Benghazi, saying that the military operation was going well. [/restrict]
