Benghazi, 10 September 2014:
A former member of the internal security apparatus, a Qaddafi-era intelligence agency, was . . .[restrict]murdered in Derna yesterday.
Local residents identified the dead woman as Salwa Younis Al-Hnaid. She had been killed in the town’s Shara Al-Bahr area, shot several times while out shopping. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Derna’s Al-Harish hospital.
Hnaid had lived in Derna as a civilian since the revolution and, despite her ties to the former regime, had been well known and well liked, local residents claimed.
There has have been regular reports of targeted attacks on former Qaddafi officials across the country since the revolution, but especially in Derna where radical Islamists have taken hold.
Attacks on women have been less frequent however. In July, the country was shocked by the murder of Fariha Al-Berkawi a former member of the General National Congress from Derna, s killed while driving her car in the town’s Shiha district.
