Tripoli, 23 September 2014:
Hospital workers in Gharyan went on strike Monday, protesting the poor security conditions in the . . .[restrict]hospital and the lack of medical supplies and assistance.
The workers released a statement calling for provision of the 2014 budget allocation from the government so that the hospital can cover operating costs. Furthermore, they asked for support in terms of provision of medical supplies.
The statement also mentioned abuses and security breaches, saying that some “outlaws” (presumably armed men) were entering the premises almost daily with no medical grounds for being there. The workers called for protection of the hospital and its staff by legitimate security personnel, even if that means international security.
According to the workers, the hospital has been receiving large numbers of medical cases from outside the town. The hospital is overwhelmed with the caseload and the current conditions, all of which coincide with the beginning of armed clashes and air strikes in or near the town. [/restrict]
