Kufra, 17 August 2014:
A power outage in the Abu Hadi area of Sebha caused the town to lose telecommunications . . .[restrict]links from Al-Madar, Libyana and LTT for several hours today, essentially cutting the town off from all contact with the outside world.
“Telecommunication has stopped in Sebha due to an electricity cut,” First Deputy Minister of Telecommunication Mohammed Ali Belrass told the Libya Herald. “Libya is experiencing a number of telecommunication cuts across the country, mainly caused by electricity shortages”.
The problem of power cuts has been worsening as armed clashes in the country have escalated. The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has said there is now limited fuel to run the power plants.
In addition to this, damaged power lines in and around Tripoli, as well as the shutdown of maintenance projects at the Obari and Sirte stations and the closures of stations in the east have only added to the problem.
The frequent cuts in electricity hit telecoms badly. “The electricity cuts are contributing to the problems with the telecommunication services. Some of the stations are mainly dependent on batteries, which need constant electricity [to recharge],” Belrass explained.
Director of Hatif Libya, Husain Al-Tuwaileb told the Libya Herald that after several hours, engineers and technicians had been able to restore power to communications systems and they were now, he said, working normally.
