Tripoli, 13 August2014:
The House of Representatives (HoR) was unable yesterday in Tobruk to pass a law to disband and . . .[restrict]remove legal recognition of the militias currently officially recognized as part of Libya’s official army.
At yesterday’s session it was expected that a law would be passed, as had been signaled in advance by Representatives.
However, while it is believed that there was enough support for the motion to gain a large majority, Representatives were apparently keen to have a very large majority in support of the law so as to give it extra force .and authority
Ali Tekbali Representative for Tripoli said yesterday that the HoR “studied with difficulty a law to disband the militias, but we did not get to a result as a result of the objection of some Representatives to specific paragraphs in the draft law. We have therefore formed a committee to re-draft the law and we will vote on it tomorrow (Wednesday)”.
It will be recalled that with the fighting taking place by opposing (yet officially recognized and funded) militias in both Tripoli and Benghazi, HoR members had made promises, many as part of their election manifestos, to disband the various militias. [/restrict]
