Tripoli, 12 July 2014:
A young Tunisian man set himself on fire in front of the Libyan embassy in . . .[restrict]Berlin on Friday, demanding compensation for military service during the revolution.
It was reported by Reuters that the man, Ashraf Abdulrazaq Mustafa Al-Bahri, aged 20, was a familiar figure to the embassy staff and that he did not appear to be motivated politically.
Bahri fought in the Libyan revolution and was therefore entitled to financial compensation. According to an employee of the embassy, he was paid €1,000 in both May and June.
When he was not paid in July, he appeared at the embassy demanding to speak with the ambassador. Security guards turned him away and he cut himself with a razor blade in protest.
According to security guards at the embassy, Bahri showed up in front of the embassy at about 11 AM on Friday with a bottle of lamp oil in-hand, demanding money.
The guards called the police, but the man had already poured the fuel over his body and ignited it.
Security personnel tore off his burning shirt and extinguished the flames. According to a statement released by the Libyan embassy in Berlin, Bahri was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Berlin. [/restrict]
