Tripoli, 22 June 2014:
The Higher National Elections Commission has announced its readiness for elections to the House . . .[restrict]of Representatives saying all processes are running smoothly.
HNEC Chairman Emad Al-Sayeh said all preparations had been made and all arrangements were in place ahead of Wednesday’s vote. He reminded voters that the polls would be open across the country’s 1,626 election centres from 8 am to 8 pm and added that tomorrow would be the final day of campaigning ahead of Tuesday’s 24 hours of “electoral silence”.
Sayeh reminded all candidates that within 15 days after polling they needed to submit a financial campaign report. Candidates must stick to financial guidelines for elections in their respective constituencies or face fines and a five-year ban from running for public office.
The HNEC chairman said punishments would similarly be imposed upon those who attempted to discourage voting by spreading false information. He said such acts would be considered electoral crimes carrying the penalty of imprisonment for no less than a year and a fine up to LD 5,000.
