Tripoli, 11 June 2014:

Benghazi’s Al-Nasr won the Libyan Basketball Cup Championship yesterday after defeating Tripoli’s Al-Ittehad 56-49. The game . . .[restrict]took place in Benghazi’s Sulaiman Al-Derrat Hall.

Ittehad was ahead in the first three quarters of the match, leading 39-34. However, Nasr took control of the game in the last quarter and won 56-49.

“The match was stopped repeatedly because fans kept entering the arena,” Abdul Hakim Matug, head of the Libyan Basketball Federation told the Libya Herald, “It was scheduled to be without spectators,” he said.

The match was supposed to be played last Friday, but the basketball federation postponed it at the last minute because of security concerns.

Although Nasr won the cup, Al-Ahly Tripoli won the basketball league this season. Nasr and Ahly will represent Libya next year in the Arab tournament and in the African championship. “Because Ahly won the league they will decide which tournament they want to participate in and Nasr will play in the other,” Matug explained.
