Benghazi, 29 May 2014:
Khalifa Hafter’s forces have warned students at Benghazi University not to attend classes, saying the campus . . .[restrict]was now being used by Islamists to store weapons and ammunition.
“The Air Force is hitting their camps so Ansar Al-Sharia and 17 February Brigade have moved their weapons and ammunition stores to the university,” Hafter’s spokesman Mohammed Al-Hijazi told the Libya Herald. “We can see them, so we know they are there.”
Hejazi urged parents not to allow their children to go to classes because it was dangerous. Hafter’s forces were concerned that Islamist groups might try to use the students to protect them, he said, adding that the Islamist groups being targeted by Operation Dignity were capable of anything.
A senior member of the university management insisted it was “a normal day” at the university although one student said there were very few students in attendance.
“There is no security at the university and the students are very few,” another student said. “We want this whole semester to be cancelled because of constant disruption to classes.” Some departments have reportedly not even been able to hold exams.
Hijazi confirmed that special operations were still being carried out in Benghazi. [/restrict]
