Tripoli, 9 May 2014:
The High National Election Commission (HNEC) has extended the deadline for the registration of candidates to . . .[restrict]the House of Representatives until 18 May.
Speaking at a press conference at HNEC headquarters two days ago the commission’s president, Emad Al-Sayeh, told reporters the decision had been taken because of the increasing number of applicants and to allow new candidates the opportunity to file all necessary paperwork. He said so far 249 candidates had registered.
Saih also announced that voter registration for the elections had been much lower than expected.” The number of voters at this stage is just 45,000,” HNEC spokesman Haider Badroush told the Libya Herald. “People have to realise that by neglecting voting, they are abandoning one of their most important rights because the results of these elections will affect the country’s institutions,” he added.
