Tripoli, 20 May 2014:
General National Congress member Masoud Abdussalam Ebaid, kidnapped the day before yesterday when Congress was attacked . . .[restrict]by gunmen intent on closing it, was freed this afternoon.
“Ebaid is fine and is beside me,” his fellow Congress member from Murzuk, Taher Makni, told the Libya Herald this afternoon.
“He was kidnapped by a mistake,” he said. “I’ve been into contact with these people and, after they realised that he was not an Islamic extremist, they released him. He is now back safe and sound.”
He did not say where his colleague had been held or by whom. However, it is claimed that the attackers were members of the Qaaqaa Brigade.
Initially, in the confusion during the attack, it was said that several members of Congress were abducted, including Congress President Nuri Abdu Sahmain. In the event, Ebaid was the only one seized, although ten members of staff working for the Public Officials Standards Commission, whose offices are in the Congress compound were also grabbed.
