Free light bulbs
By Jamal Adel.
Tripoli, 12 March 2014:
The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) is handing out a million free . . .[restrict]energy-saving light bulbs in attempt to increase public awareness about electricity consumption and encourage consumers to reduce electricity usage.
“GECOL launched the campaign this morning in Tripoli’s Bu Sleem district at a ceremony attended by its executive manager, number of GECOL manager and Bu Sleem Local Council,” GECOL spokesperson Lutfi Ghoma told the Libya Herald.
The decision to distribute the light bulbs was the “result of increasing awareness about how to get consumers to lower cut electricity consumption so we can reduce the pressure on the national grid”.
Ghoma also added that GEGOL was looking at proposals from a US energy company to build and maintain a new power station in Libya.
GECOL still has to address the issue that it already effectively provides many of its customers with free electricity either because they have not received any bills or because they ignore them when they do.
