Tripoli, 29 March 2014:
General National Congress (GNC) has issued a call to all its members to cancel . . .[restrict]their holidays or any other events and attend tomorrow’s session to vote on the electoral law that will see it replaced by a new House of Representatives.
The call has to turn up to what Congress said was an “important sitting tomorrow” was reported by the Libya news agency LANA.
However, some Congress members say this is the first they have heard.
Sebha Congressman Al-Hadi Al-Sharief told the Libya Herald that he would be attending the sitting as usual but that he had not been officially informed by the Presidency of the Congress to cancel his holiday to return to Tripoli for Sunday’s session or that it was especially important.
“The Congressional presidency informs the Congress members by sending SMS”, Sharief said, “but I have not received an SMS yet”.
LANA said that the reason the call had been made was because of the pledge Congress President Nuri Abu Sahmain to issue the election law by the end of March. Tomorrow is the last general session this month.
Following being ransacked at the beginning of the month, Congress is now meeting in the former Royal Guest Palace at Busetta. It met for a fortnight in the Mahari Radisson Blu Hotel, but that was not popular with locals and hotel residents alike. [/restrict]
